You can make a big difference...

This month’s story comes from Isabella, who is 9 years old. During the first lockdown she was inspired to help her local community and this is what she did:

When Covid-19 came, things got harder for a lot of people. I wanted to make sure anyone in need had everything they needed and, in particular, had enough food. Since we were in lockdown, I thought about how I could support the foodbank from home.

I designed and printed out 100 leaflets asking for donations to the foodbank and posted them through the doors of the people in the streets around us! We had a box on our drive so that people could drop donations to us, which we then delivered to the foodbank, to be given to those in need.

I was really surprised by how quickly people donated food and how much they were bringing. Within a day a lot of food had come in. Some even made it a regular weekly drop off all throughout the lockdown!

Doing this changed my perspective of how people can work together to help others. Not only were our neighbours really happy to be able to donate food, it raised awareness of the foodbank and all the good work that they are doing.

Showing God’s love in practical ways is important to me. I want to help people, especially as I saw how Covid-19 had affected people. I recognise that I am fortunate to have enough food so I wanted to help those who don’t. I believe that even small things can make a difference.

I want people reading this to know that if you only do one thing, it doesn’t matter if it’s small, because you can make a big difference. Just like in the story of the feeding of the 5,000 people in the Bible - God can use our smallest donation of food to make a big difference!

WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM ISABELLA?

  • Little ideas can make things happen. It was a simple idea and it worked beautifully and brought the community together over one goal. Our communities can be more generous if we give them ways to be.

  • Your age doesn’t matter when showing God’s love. Whether you're 7 or 70, if you have an idea and pursue it, God will aid you in your endeavours.

What strikes you about Isabella’s story?

What small or simple ideas do you have to show God’s love to others?

Who else could you invite to help you?
