UWE Civic engagement and community

There are so many ways UWE students are part of the amazing community action that happens across the city. One way is through the Professional Volunteering Scheme delivered by the Civic and Community Engagement team. This academic year over 50[FR1]  students have shared their creative skills, volunteering their time to collaborate with charities and community organisations.

The scheme connects students with the city and supports them to use their skills to create positive change. From a film to showcasing community climate action, to illustrations of inspirational Bristolians and an animation which captures the spirit of a community playground to digital content to promote accessible mental health support.

Through sound design, costume design, acting as stagehands and more, students have been supporting Local Learning’s Meadows to Meaders, a theatre show telling true stories of people who have lived, worked, and grown up in Filton, Patchway and Southmead performed by local residents.

UWE filmmaking students collaborated with young people in South Bristol to create short films to explore what the new 224 Youth Zone meant to them.

‘I'm going back to 224 Youth Zone in a couple months, they've got their grand opening this summer, so I'm going to go back there and film that.’  Oscar UWE filmmaking student.

We will be celebrating these students and all our incredible student volunteers through our Student Volunteering Award this June. If a UWE student has volunteered their time to support the work you do, please encourage them to nominate themselves for an award!
